21 year old runs 26 mile marathon a day - for 143 consecutive days !

I'm referring of course, to Terry Fox. His athletic accomplishments should be an inspiration to the members of any fitness forum IMO.

Terry was fellow Canadian. Terry ran the equivalent of a marathon ( 26 miles ) a day - on one artificial leg no less - for 143 consecutive days. He ran his ' Marathon of Hope " across Canada in 1980 to raise funds for cancer research - but had to stop his run early when his cancer returned - after running 3,339 miles on one leg. He died in 1981 from cancer.

I had a chance to see Terry in person on day 93 of his Marathon as he ran through my home town - it was July 13, 1980 - a day I will never forget. Seeing him and saying hello to Terry changed my life forever. Anytime I think I've had a hard workout, or that I'm in great shape, or that life is getting me down - I think of Terry. When I think of a role model for my 4 kids in terms of setting goals, courage, guts, stamina, determination, discipline, and selflessness - I tell them about Terry.

When I coaching and motivating my hockey players, I often refer to Terry. I tell them to remember Terry as THE role model of someone who believed in himself, someone who believed he could do anything - no matter how daunting or impossible a goal seemed, someone who had the will to never give up - and to always have hope.

I'm running in the Terry Fox Run for cancer research this upcoming Sunday. If there is a run in your area, think about taking part - or sponsoring someone who is.

" I don’t feel that this is unfair. That’s the thing about cancer. I’m not the only one, it happens all the time to people. I’m not special. This just intensifies what I did. It gives it more meaning. It’ll inspire more people. I just wish people would realize that anything’s possible if you try; dreams are made possible if you try " - Terry Fox
