Hey everyone

I really need some advice.
I have always been a large guy and this year I have decided to do something about it. I plan to go and do some traveling next year and I want to be looking my best.

I hate the way I currently look. so fustrating when i go out with my mates and they all end up stuffing the faces with junk food and still stay super thin. Compared to them I work out more, eat hell of alot less but still am bigger than them.... so annoying!

Im about 6"1. 220 pounds

In the last 5 or so weeks I have lost about 3 pounds and have noticed a huge difference in waist size but im worried that I wont reach my target.

I work 40 hours a week my shifts change every week from working early mornings to late nights. Which makes it extremely hard to keep to a routine.

I quit the gym recently for this reason. I wasnt making the most out of my membership. But I also invested in some home equipment. I have dumbells. a barbell and bench. and also have a treadmill. All perchased fairly recently.

My average day is normally as follows.

-In the mornings before work I have a bowl of Meusli.

-I then ride to work on my bike. (about 15mins, average pase dont like to work up a sweat before work)

-Say I arrive at work at 7am I work through till about 10 when I take a 30 min break. At this point I choose to skip the fatty fry ups the canteen provides and tend to go for a peice of fruit (apple or banana) and a low fat yogurt.
I get through about 3-4 cups of water too.

-At about 1pm I go for my 1h lunch break. I tend to have here a baguette of somekind. maybe tuna or ham with luttuce+tomato. Also getting through as much water as possible.

-At 4pm I ride back home (another 15 mins a little more intense this time)

When I get home i think thats the problem area as I live with my mom and younger brother its so easy after a hard shift at work to feel a little pekish and raid the cupboards for something to eat. I have got really good at resisting temptation and feel oh so guilty when I grab a muffin or something.

I try and drink about 2L of water in the evenings.

I run 20-30 mins on my treadmill, I do interval training. jogging for 5 mins, running for 1 min.

I also do weights 2-3 nights a week.
I do 3 different exersises working 3 different muscles. 15 reps and 3 sets.
I also do between 30-50 situps and some core excersises.

I just dont seem to be shifting the weight fast enough. Is there any suggestions you can give me to help me reach my goal?

A friend of mine thinks its definatly a metabolism problem and I need to focus on speeding it up. Whats the best way to do this?
She suggested taking fat metaboliser tablets do they work?

Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Forget the pills

Hi there,
Just read your post, kudos to you. You seem driven and motivated. You WILL Meet Your Weight Loss Goals. Keep in mind that losing the weight is half the battle keeping it off is the other half. The best way to boost your metabolism is not taking any types of fat metabolizer nonsense. From what I know building muscle mass will accomlish this. Keep weight lifting and keep up the good work.

To safely lse weighto and keep it off, you should lose one percent of your weight in pounds a week. You're 220 lbs, so that is 2.20 lbs a week. You're losing around that much so stick at what you're doing, you're on the right track!

In 20 weeks you will lose 40 lbs. It's worth it in the end, just keep it up.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice guys.

I was wondering. What would give a better fat burning workout

a 30 run

or a 60 min jog?

By your definition, what is the difference between a run and a jog? I haven't read the rest of this thread yet.

Also, to answer your question, before you answer mine, the one that will "burn the most fat" is the one that will burn the most calories. Losing fat is a function of energy (calorie) balance.

Thanks Steve.

Well I think my treadmill works in Km/h but will have to double check.

The other day I managed a 1hour workout on my treadmill (Totally impressed with myself, didnt know I had it in me)
I would start of on a slow jog, which is setting 6 (km/h? does that sound right?) You could probably power walk it at this speed (though uncomfortably)
on this setting I jog for 5 minutes.
I then crank the speed up to 10 for 1 minute before going back to the jog.

Today however I tried taking it up a notch and seeing how far I could go on setting 8. a fast jog. I decided to stop at 30 mins.

Sorry if my figures are a bit Vague. Cant tell 100% without actually looking at the treadmill.

I also noticed after about 15 mins on setting 7-8 I clock up about 100 calories (according to the dial)
Is that right?
If it is.... thats 15mins jogging to burn that yogurt I had for lunch... grrr
Im probably missing something here.
