170 miles, 2 days. one bike.

On April 12-13, 2008, I’m joining thousands of cyclists for the BP MS 150 from Houston to Austin. This two-day bike ride isn’t a race, but it does raise money in the race to find the cure for multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease of the central nervous system. Last year, 13,000 cyclists raised $12.3 million to help 17,000 Texans affected by multiple sclerosis. Researchers are making progress, but the cause and cure are still over the horizon.

And that’s why I saddle up to ride. With this journey, I’m helping the National Multiple Sclerosis Society fund research to find the cause, cure and treatment of MS. My participation also helps support services for people affected by MS. My personal fund-raising goal is $400+, supporting the ride’s 2008 goal of $14 million. With your support, we can make a positive impact today in the lives of 17,000 men, women and children affected by multiple sclerosis.

I am going to be doing the ride next April. I really need to get in tip top shape for this ride. I am already a somewhat active cyclist, I ride about 20 miles a week, I run every morning for about 1 hour, I am looking to do some body weight training also, not necessarily for cycling though. if there are any training programs, or supplements that you think would help, I will try almost anything to get in shape. I appreciate your help.

Congratulations on this undertaking. You should start bumping up the bike mileage soon. It sounds like you are only riding once weekly, so I would start riding 2 - 3 x / week and for longer than 1 hour. Eventually, work your way up to riding 5 - 6 hours / day, which is what you will have to do on two consecutive days for the MS 150. Depending on what condition you are in, now is the time to start losing weight if necessary.

FWIW, I have done 170 miles in 1 day and will do another 170 in November so I know 85 / day is doable.

i used to live right next to tully stadium, where they park to start the ride. and everytime i saw them i always wanted to join. but now i might have multiple sclerosis myself and i doubt i can do it now. lol hahaha ok *sigh*
