17 yr old looking for football tips for Linebacker

Hey I'm new here so I guess I'll post my stats:
Age: 17
Weight: 175
Height: 6'0"
Bench: 180 lbs (not amazing but i'm working it up)
Squat: 270 lbs

Yes I'm not that big for that position but I always make my tackles and such.I've been going to the gym for a while so i do most of the basics and secondary stuff. So my question is mostly about any special tricks for that positions in the gym. Things I should be doing. I know the basics like bench press, squats, leg press, shoulderpress, pull ups all that kind of basic stuff. So anything perhaps out of the ordinary that works for you? Also looking to increase my speed and agility. So any drills that would increase my speed to use at the gym or at home would be greatly appreciated.

You could do cone drills, ladder work, plyometrics. You definitely want to work change of direction movements since that is one of your most required movement patterns. I would also try to incorporate some grip work since you'll be doing a lot of tackling.

Another jman?

I'm younger than you, but ive been playing it for a few years and these are some things I've learned.

Reading plays- the most important thing for a lineback
If the linemans feet are
Up, with weight on the hand: watch for either a screen or a run play
Down, with the heels on the ground: watch for the pass and drop to your coverage zone.

If your "key" lineman pulls, you shuffle with him and hit the hole that he tries to block into, which will effectively shut down the run play and make the ball carrier bounce it to the outside where he has no blocking.

As for weight lifting, you need to work up your Legs for tackling (a great workout is the powerclean) your neck, shoulders and back, because linebackers tend to make a lot of contact in a single game, and if these muscles are weak, you can get some serious damage.

good work

you look like your doing a fine job. I'm a freshmen at a brand new highschool and we sucked this year but we had no seniors so our varsity was all soph and juniors but they were hard asses you dont mess with them.

I think your doing fine but your squat HAS to be amped up 300-320 pounds im maxing 225 as fresh. we have a soph body builder doing 600 your 17 with some great genetics you keep on working youll be fine. Bench as you know needs work to but youll get there.

^^^^Watch your knees with taht much wieght as a fresh you can to some serrious damage to your back to Take it from me I know I was putting up 400 with easy reps as a fresh^^^

MLB here to
11th grade
bench 225
weigh 215
quick as a mofo
and don't squat

as for special excersises I would say swimming no really swimming b/c you build up crazy endurance and are abel to kill in the 4th

You can also try the snatch and maybe do some burbies(google them) they work good

The best thing you can do though is stay dedicated

Zach

Well since I don't knowwhat type of defense you are running I can't really tell you much about the on the field stuff , but like the other guy said , you got to know how to read your lineman.

As for weight training. I slways recommend power cleaning for any football player. I wouldn't really worry about your bench that much though. I would put more focus on your squat. Also work on parts that are prone to Injury such as your neck(try four way necks) and your back.

this guy graduated last June. Check the dates peeps!
