10k Personal Best

Hi Everyone, :D

Just thought I'd share my progress so far. Have been exercising for about 13 weeks and have gone from running for about 15 mins to now 3/4 times a week. Two workouts involve intervals for 30 mins, one is a 30/40 minute jog and then each Saturday/Sunday I aim to do a 10k run.
Yesterday I beat my personal record and managed 10k without stopping in 56.54!!!!! :D ;) :)
I'm really pleased with my result, my next goal is to run 15k.

Would love to know how individuals build up their running and any tips on moving up to 15k would be greatly appreciated.

Also what are your best times for 5 or 10k???

OMG, I'm impressed. 10k! I'll take ur advice on how to accomplish that.:)

I am very impressed! You did it on only 13 weeks!! Good for you. I have just started running (3 weeks) I was very impressed with myself because a few days ago, I did a 5k on the treadmill. Yesterday I went outside on the pavement to do the same thing and thought I was was going to have a heart attack. Obviously, there is a big difference between treadmill and roadway. I have a long way to go.

Let us know when you hit your 15k.;)

Thanks for your reply and Well done on achieving your 5k.:)
I totally understand where your coming from. Outdoor running is very different and I found it really hard at first.
Something that has helped me become fitter and able to run for longer is the HIIT. I do this 2/3 each week for around 30 mins. I kept reading about it on this forum and so many people recommend this way of exercising. It has worked for me. Also whenever I run on a treadmill I ensure I run on a incline of at least 1-1.5. This then helps when I go outside and don't get a shock from the inclines on the roads/ grass/pavement..

I also find that I have to be really comfortable when running outside and try and ensure I have everything I need.
Good trainers - I use Asics and swear by them.
Ipod - Depending how long I want to run for I ensure I have enough music to cover the run. This way I can't stop until I have run out of music to run to!!
Polar watch - Recent purchase, it works out how far you've run. I love it.
Water belt - Holds four small bottles of water. This way I don't hold anything whilst running.
And finally clothing. I ensure everything I wear is loose, things that don't ride up and need to be pulled down when running and I tie my hair out of the way and wear a head band.
I know this is all basic things, but for me each time I went out running there would be something that would stop me from progressing or keep me from focusing on my running.

I'm going for 12K at the weekend;)
