I know from all of my research and reading on this forum that this sort of diet can be really harmful and usually doesnt work because you need more than 1000 calories to even sustain yourself throughout the day. But i was thinking yesterday about our ancient ancestors. They didnt have the processed food and refined sugars of course, all they had was veggies, fruit, and lean meats. I also have read somewhere that fruit was a rare treat because it was hard to come by. SO they basically had wild game, fish, veggies, oh and nuts. I just find it hard to believe that they managed to get their full 1500 cal or 2100 cal a day by eating those food, i mean veggies barely have any cals, and lean meats are a low cal food......soooo they obviously managed and probably were much healthier than us, so why cant i do this? If i have the will power of course and can break this addiction to junk food, why cant i go on a low cal diet of lean meats and veggies and some fruit, and stay around 1000 cal and very little fat?

they ate a lot of fatty meat remember, and they were way more muscular and active in general. They were most definatly not vegetarians and ate both veges and meat. Unlike us picky people though they eat the fat and internal organs more so than us nowdays. Also factor in nuts which are fairly high calorie, amoung other things.

A prehistoric person who only ate 1500-2100 calories a day would have starved to death. It takes a lot of calories to sustain a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. You just eat a larger volume of food, if the food you're eating isn't particularly calorie-dense. And you eat every scrap of fatty food you can, including marrow and grubs.

It's easy to restrict calories by cutting out what had been a significant source of calories. But eventually, you adapt, and get the calories you need from what you have. I'd have no trouble eating 2,000 calories of veggies and lean proteins over the course of a day, in part because I already eat a lot of veggies and lean protein, so I'm used to that kind of diet.

ok so unless im completely sedentary 1000 calories a day is unrealistic? The only reason im asking this is because i had planned on trying it, because i have tried 1400 cal (eating regular food, some junk, some healthy) and it didnt seem to work, i just mantained my weight. I HAVENT tried to eat only lean meats, veggies, and fruits, along with exercise........so if i do that and raise my calories to 1,200 -1,400 that may work better?

A week ago you posted saying you've never stuck with any caloric reduction for more than a week. Assume for the sake of argument that maintenance calories for you is about 2,000 a day, taking into account any exercise you may do. So you've got a 600-calorie deficit. At the end of a week, you have a theoretical weight loss of 1.2 pounds. That's small enough that random water weight fluctuation could easily mask it.

You have to stick with it for longer than a week before you conclude that something works or doesn't work.

totally agreed. I went on a VLC diet (very low calorie diet) once ages back and it took a week to notice it even though i was on extremely low calories. Pretty impossible to stick to it long term however, and pretty darned bad unless you get enough protien :)
