1 Major thing Windows Vista is missing is...

Windows Vista should have included an antivirus program. now it's not anticompetitive cuz vista already includes a 2 way firewall and antispyware.

vista just shouldn't have been invented. i hate it!!!

Funny Vista story.

- I needed a new computer.

- Ordered a brand new dell. With all the bells.

- It had vista.

- 2 weeks later I returned it because Vista was such a pain.

- I bought a MAC.

- Hands down the best computing decision I have ever made.

Yep :D

What has linux got to offer some people ask?
- No need for Anti-Virus...ever
- No need for Firewalls...ever (not to say you can't have them)
- No need for Anti-Spyware....EVER
- Uses 10x less resources
- Runs 10 Faster
- Finds, Downloads, Installs, Configures AND Updates ALL software automatically
- 1000x more powerful than anything else
- WORKSPACES, I don't know how windows and mac users can live without them. It's like the tabbed browsing revolution, but 100x better.
- Open Source: Freedom, Security, Bug-Free Experience (relatively), no propriety, no licence restrictions, just freedom :D

But most importantly, XGL.
The world's first and only true 3 dimensional desktop environment. Truly, the greatest revolution since the GUI has come....the 3d desktop.
And it's only available on linux.

( Not to mention it doesn't take a monster of a machine to run, like Vista's completely useless Aero)

However, It is not optimized for gaming, video, photo, sound editing and wont even play most games for that matter. Difficult to find compatible hardware. Limited amount of applications. And, in most cases it looks very ugly:p.

Its Security will not be so strong soon enough. As more and more people use Linux the more and more Malware "puplishers" will write their little "nasties" for Linux.

However, It is not optimized for gaming

Depends what you mean by "optimised". If you mean that games are designed to be natively ran on windows, then that's why Cedega exists.
And...I can't imagine any other way windows would be more optimised for gaming. Since linux has much better resource management, games would actually run a lot faster on linux.

None of that is true, maybe if you used linux you would know.
Linux is the best for multimedia, because one player can play every single type of media that exists on this planet, and as far as I've experienced, there isn't a single media player like that for windows. I had like 5 different ones installed, for different types of media. Here, I just use mplayer for everything. Once you take the 2 mins to grab all the codecs, thats it.

Not to mention linux has awesome video editing software. I can't remember what it's called, but a friend of mine says it's ftw.

As for limited amounts of applications....please don't make me laugh. Linux comes with more applications out-of-the-box than you would find on any average windows system...and I don't mean an out-of-the-box windows system.
Not to mention the infinite software in the packagers' repositories, and not to mention the infinite software on the internet in general...and lets not forget sourceforge.

Once again, use linux - then you'll understand it's true power of security. It's not because "few" use linux, it's because it's designed to be secure, it's designed to be safe, it's designed such that it is impossible for anything to harm your computer.

Unlike windows....

Oh also you said it's ugly....I just don't get it. You have 3 major desktop environments, which (out-of the box, once more) looks amazing, but the best thing is - you can customise them in ways, you would never imagine if you use windows.

And xgl...I mean - XGL, just watch the youtube video 8)

alright, I wont admit to knowing much about linux beyond a few brief encounters. And, I found it to be slow, ugly and boring each time. I know there are a number of different "versions" though. I might create a dual boot in my next build (vista+Linux) though which Distro would good to try?

BTW, By optimized i am talking about several different features that i don't feel like listing.

Linux is extremely powerful. We would not even be posting on this forum without it as it is hosted on an apache server. (as are the majority of websites on the internet.)

I have looked into Linux, wanted to use it, and ran into only one reason not to.

- The Learning Curve.

There needs to be some experimentation for the best distribution to use, as well as applications. With my work I needed something secure, and that came with what I needed without have to spend a month or so experimenting.

Mac gave me security I needed as well as what I had to have to keep from falling behind with my work. (not to mention that I do not have any of the bugs that a windows system has)

None of that changes the fact that it is only a matter of time before Linux becomes mainstream.

I cant use linux because the game I play, the 3rd party programs do not work on linux. I play for money so I stick with XP because vista sucks :(

I know there are a number of different "versions" though.

Yeh, a bit over a thousand :D

I would most certainly recommend Ubuntu.

Most distros of linux come with basically everything you ever need to use.
For work, I recommend SUSE Enterprise Linux. It only costs $50, and you get unlimited (or a lot, I forget) support.
Or OpenSuse which is free, and the same thing, minus support. Though there are still thousands of people on SuSE forums who can help you.

the 3rd party programs do not work on linux.

No.

3rd party windows programs do not work on linux, just like 3rd party linux programs do not work on linux.

Not a very good reason not to switch if you ask me. Especially seeing as how linux has much better alternatives for any 3rd party windows programs. Not to mention they are free.

Example, k3b > Nero. Faster, more feature, looks better and FREE.

I have XP and like it I guess, I'm not all that into all of it though.

I've had to do 3 recoveries on my HP - the first using the uncorruptable recovery partition (that was corrupted), the second and third were full destructive recoveries. BTW, nothing was ever found to answer for it - no viruses, worms, trojans, whatever - clean. No explaination for the multiple various daily errors that led up to all that.

Fast forward 1 yr later - I will go through periods that I still get random errors, Norton and Quicken seem to carry the most.

I downloaded a diagnostic to check the hard drive from the manufacturer (Western Digital), it showed as fine, so who knows.

My question is, might any of all that crap be related to Windows and their various security probs and bugs? Could I switch to Linux or should I just wait until we get a new computer and start fresh (will be having one built next time for sure - prob next year or so). Also, would I be able to transfer my data in Quicken over to it or is it entirely seperate?

If you can afford to format your hard-drive, I'd say go linux now.

Yes, those errors are most certainly related to windows, or possibly Norton (it's not very good) - but most probably both.

What types of errors are they?

As for Quicken, I'm not sure as I've never used it. OpenOffice might be able to handle it. To check, download openoffice for windows from and try and open a Quicken file with it.

The errors are pretty random and occassional. Anytime I restart, I get a "Program not responding" from ccApp (Norton?). Most errors I get are program not responding errors. My Quicken freezes up sometimes, which sucks, b/c that's all my financial stuff.

I don't know, sometimes it gets bad and I think I'm ready to do anything to make it better. Other times, it's not so bad and I don't want to deal with the whole big re-formatting mess.

Basically, though, would it be the equivelent of a recovery, but reformat with Linux instead of Windows?

All I have to say is that if you have never used a different OS than windows, you don't know what you are missing.

It's like, you are using something really crappy, and you just don't know it.

I was amazed when I got my Mac, its like they actually thought about how people used computers.

Most of the Linux people I know say the same thing. "People use windows because they have never experienced anything better."

I admit that Linux beats all others in the reliability area. I ran it as my exclusive OS for 5 years when I got fed up with Win95, and it was infallible.

Now, I'm building a new computer and it has to have MS windows. I'm going with top rated stuff from Newegg (I may buy a few pieces elsewhere. Newegg doesn't have the best prices).

A lot of people sing the praises of Vista, but there are some detractors.

I'm debating WinXP Pro x64 or Vista 64. Basically, it's going to be my game, pic, streaming video and music center.

vista was the best thing which happened to MAC ever, I am switching to Mac too.

...yet another one is leaving the darkside.
