Hi all,

I just heard about "Luo Han Guo" (sp) for the first time over the weekend. It is apparently a Chinese fruit and gives you the sweet taste without the calories. It is also supposedly safe for diabetics. So I just wanted to share this great news with everyone here. There are many brands out there, just do a google ;)

:cheers2:

Have you actually tasted it? I have been using Stevia for the longest time, and I am totally used to it, but when people come over and that is all I have for a sweetener, they all complain about the taste.

Stevia is quite a taste to get used to though. I eventually decided I can budget in a max of 4 tsps sugar per day... ah, the small pleasures!

Luo Han Guo tastes better than Stevia!

Yes I have! It actually tastes a LOT better than Stevia to be quite honest. I totally agree that Stevia gets a lot of time to get used to. I also read somewhere that it messes with your sperm-count etc if you're a man. Luo Han Guo does have some after taste just like the rest of the sugar-alternatives, but it doesn't feel like "chemical" as it does with Stevia. But like I said there are many variations. The one I used is the "Sweetsensation" brand that you can get from either neway.com ($9.99+$6 shipping) or slightly cheaper at sites like encure.net ($11.99+Free shipping) etc for a bottle of about 60g. Keep in mind it is actually 4 times sweeter than regular granulated sugar so you'll have to use 4 times less (this can get a bit frustrating at first!). But the good thing is one bottle is supposed to last for well over a month. I have used it since beginning of June and still have about half the bottle left (And I have a BIG sweet tooth!) :p

hmmmmm interesting, ill have to try it........, no splenda though, we all know it causes cancer! I noticed when i ate splenda it raised my heart rate..........

Interesting comment on Splenda erose77. I started dumping several packets into a quart of lemon juice/water/ice recently at night about the same time I started having itching and burning hands and feet at night. I'll stop using the Splenda and see if it is tied to it. Not saying it did it but good place to start; I've never been much on sweeteners and don't know what gave me that idea. Trying to stay away from a daily diet Mountain Dew I guess.

It isnt proven that it causes cancer, but there is extensive research concluding that it is harmful, just google it. Also my mother has had the same symptoms including her heart rate speeding up. Just make sure you read the labels, because Aspartame is another name for splenda.........

Eek! Not true. Splenda is Sucralose, which is made by chemically separating sugar (non-technical explanation). There's bad stuff about all of the common commercial sugar replacements, so everyone should read up and decide for him/herself. Oftentimes 0 Calorie or low calorie doesn't mean it's better for you. HTH!

I didn't know Splenda was Sucralose. Are you sure? I always thought Sucralose was a natural extract of sugar and is safe to eat!! Also I think Splenda's mostly associated with Alzheimer's disease (If you can spell it, you don't have it! lol).. Any how, so had any of you tried the Luo Han Guo yet? I wanna know the responses especially with regards to how y'all may use it in different recipes.

What is sucralose?
SPLENDA® contains sucralose, which is derived from a regular white sugar (sucrose) molecule. However, sucralose is not perceived by the body as a sugar. It passes through the body rapidly and is excreted without being broken down.

Since it is not absorbed into the blood stream, SPLENDA® does not affect blood glucose levels and is therefore safe for use by everyone; including children, pregnant or nursing women and people with diabetes
