advice needed

Hey guys,
So I'm an 18 year old overweight male, i'm 5'11" 240lbs. Obviously, I realize i'm quite overweight and need to lose weight.

I'm really out of shape, can't run for more than about 4-5 mins without getting the "stitch", etc. I'm hoping to get down to around 200lbs by August and then eventually hopefully around 180.

I've started a diet of moderation, as I don't believe in fad diets or anything like that. In addition I found a website called fitday.com where you can make a log to count your calories and I aim to be just under 2,000/day.

My question is what strategy should I take when I work out? Should I focus strictly on cardio and if so what's the best way to working my stamina up so that I can run for extended periods of time?

I really appreciate everyone's help and I'll be sure to keep you updated on my progress!

Running is probably the best way to gain stamina, every day (or two) run until your tired, and keep doing it. For me, what i could run was pathetic, like 200 metres and i would become tired. But after a while youll laugh at how little you could actually run, its a long process but healthy weight loss is also a long process.

Running is not practical for everyone though and i wouldnt buy a treadmill unless you really get into it. You could always do aerobics (think like burpees or however its spelled) or anything that gets your heart going really.

Yeah, if running doesn't suit you try something else. I am in really good shape, but I just can't run at all. I'll hit the eliplitcal at the gym or a stationary bike, or ride a real bike outdoors.

Do some weight training too. Add some lean muscle mass to your body. The more you have, the more calories you'll burn even while you are sleeping. :)

The best way to really improve your running is to run :) and it really works too, 3 months ago, I could only do ten minutes on the treadmill, now i do 30 just as a warmup.

It's good what you're doing with the diet, because it needs to be something you can stick with, in theory, forever and not something that you're going to get bored of after a month and put the weight back on.

I would start lifting some heavy weights. It works wonders for losing fat off your body as lean muscle mass burns loads of calories. Although, it's important to remember that if you start putting on a lot of muscle, to keep in mind that ideally its fat you want to be losing. if you start putting on muscle your "weight" loss might start levelling out after a while but your fat loss should continue.

hope this helps :D

Hey dear i think running is best for lose your weight and try to walk as you can . i also use these strategies for losing my weight and it work. You should also use vegetables and fruits and not eat too much use simple things for eat and try to use cycling. At the end try to run as you can do. don't stop.

Dont forget you can do tons of bodyweight exercises at home for free too - its not all about running.

include squats, lunges, push ups, Rows, Dips and Core exercises
try doing 30s work, 30s rest and repeat 4 times.
should take you about 20 mins :)

hi fsguy92,

if you want long term consistency, why not consider a sport or activity that calls you. I mean running can get dull after a while and there are so many more fun exercises out there. Why not consider a sport, or martial arts, or even dance can be a way. What i find works for me is the inspiration of what movements i can execute. I personally am a martial arts nut, and for me i feel driven to exercise by the feel of the movements and what i can achieve with my body. The cool thing about it is how exercise is about skill development rather than just keeping in shape. Just an idea
