What's the best set/rep ratio to gain strength?

So right now when I start a heaver weight, I start with a 2x10 (2 sets of 10 reps) exercise, then a 3x10 and finally 4x10. When I can do the 4x10 exercise fairly well I increase the weight and repeat the process.
I'm fairly satasfied with doing this, as it does work. Though I was wanting to know, what do you think is the most benefical set/rep routine for gaining strength? If I start the weight doing sets of 10 as I do, is the weight maybe to light?

5x5 allows you to lift really heavy.

from experience working with clients you are sort of on the right lines but mixing too many things around make your workouts simple by using the pyramid method of 10 reps then add extra weight the do 8 reps then add more weight again then do 6 reps use this method with compound exercises to get the best results

hope that helped

If you're looking for maximal strength gains, then go for maximal strength training. Generally, this involves 3+ sets of 1-6 reps. 3x5 and 5x5 are pretty common routine themes. I would progress by increasing the weight slightly every session, or doing another rep, rather than by adding a whole extra set at the same weightXreps.
