I don't think fat cells can divide. the body makes more by differentiating preadipocytes (precussor fat cells: adipocytes). When it comes to adults making more fat cells, I think it's a controversial issue, if they can then it is probably less than what can happen during childhood. This is one of the reasons childhood obesity is so dangeoraus. You'll get a lot of fat cells that you'll have to live with your entire life. Unless you get lipo, after which is controversial if the fat cell number could return to what it was before (fat hyperplasia in adults being controversial an all)
