Spot reduction question

I've read on here that you can't lose weight in one area. Why can you build muscles in one area but not lose fat in the same area?

Surely there are cardio exercises aimed at certain areas.

Your body chooses via genetics where you will store/reduce body fat during periods of caloric deficit.

You can build specific muscles. But you can't Absolutely cannot contract your underlying muscles to burn fat directly off the body part. The only 'exercise' that burns fat from a specific are is called Liposuction.

BODY FAT AND MUSCLE ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TISSUES

Muscle is built if you stimulate them, and you can stimulate different muscles through different exercises. Fat is a different story though. When you body needs energy it will mobilize fatty acids from your fat deposits, but this does not happen at the site of the muscle you are working. It happens all over :(

I think there were some researchers who managed to stop reduce from the tighs of women who were doing very intense interval cycling exercise. They hypothesised that it was because of an increased amount of catecholamines (adrenaline) in the blood. Since the tighs were the muscles being exercised, most of the blood went there and thus the catecholamines too. catecholamines make fat deposits deposit fatty acids into the blood stream to be used as energy. But this is really all very weak, it was one study, one hypothesis that I don't think has been tested after that (though it should be) so it's really nothing to structure a workout around unless you really want to experiment.
 
Here's an analogy: your body is a car. You can choose to modify your car by adding new rims, a spoiler, tinting, and a stereo...but you cannot choose what area of the gas tank the car burns up. it simply gradually decreases in volume, as a whole, as its used up.

There is only ONE way to spot reduce: surgery (i.e. liposuction)

Muscles don't get energy directly from fat, thus crunches don't cause your ab muscles to get stored energy from abdominal fat.

It would be friggin awesome if that's how our bodies worked, but its more complicated than that.
 
hmmm, what about fat storage? I wonder if lipo suction people find that the body fills those sucked out areas more readily. if the treated area os more prone to gather fat.

like the body does some balancing.

Aren't fat cells all over your body pretty much, and genetics determines where you store them, but as you gain and lose weight the fat cells all over your body either increase or decrease in size. So you can't just shrink the fat cells where you want to. True??

actually, It has been discovered that you can produce fat cells, so even if you get them sucked out, you can get them back if you don't eat healthier or work out.

I think, if I remember correctly, That peole who get lipo will gain weight faster in other areas, but once you start producing fat cells game on....it's a free for all....lol

I also have to add, I don't think lipo is ever a solution to getting rid of fat UNLESS you workout, eat right, and have places of stored fat that are just not going away. THEN it may work for you, but I bet *most* people who workout, and eat right can get rid of that fat and aren't likely to go get lipo..........
 
its just carzy to think a person could get their midsection all sucked out, and it be a "freebie" ya know.

I dont know anything abotu this stuff.

SO- fat cells are there- and they get fatter? And when we trim weight, we actually have just as many cells but they are not at fat?

That's how I understood it, it's pretty much predetermined but obesity can cause the body to produce more fat cells, because they divide when they are at maximum capacity, so to speak. But we pretty much have the same amount of fat cells from puberty on.
 
I don't think fat cells can divide. the body makes more by differentiating preadipocytes (precussor fat cells: adipocytes). When it comes to adults making more fat cells, I think it's a controversial issue, if they can then it is probably less than what can happen during childhood. This is one of the reasons childhood obesity is so dangeoraus. You'll get a lot of fat cells that you'll have to live with your entire life. Unless you get lipo, after which is controversial if the fat cell number could return to what it was before (fat hyperplasia in adults being controversial an all)
 
Okay you're right they don't divide really. I just found this article, interesting: Not sure what kind of cells the immature cells are (I guess they're not fat cells?) but the body does make more when the fat cells can't grow anymore, so yea when you produce lots of extra ones you're stuck with them. That sucks. So can we assume that if you stay at a regular weight your whole life you have the same number you had at adolescence?

they do die, but are replaced....

I have seen the research from this research article mentioned in a few other articles. Definitely looks like an interesting read. :)

What they have not discovered yet is: What regulates this process? And where can they intervene?

Man if they could find that out, they may be able to help people who are obese lose that weight for good.....
