Optimal workout time?

I've never asked this, but have read a few things on it...

If I'm lifting heavy, (squats, bench, pull ups, etc) how long should i be in the gym for? How much is too much? I'm usually never in the gym longer than 1 hour, but sometimes i think that might not be long enough. Does it depend on what i do, or is their a specific time i should set a guideline for?

To be honest, there isnt really any specific times to be in the gym, obviously long enough to get a good work-out in. So anything over 30minutes. Depends on how much time you have and what exercises you're doing and what you're hoping to achieve. People with no a lot of free time can concentrate on compound exercises to fit as much as possible in, where as people with time to spare may want to do isolation exercises. It really just depends. I would suggest an hour would be long enough if you're just completing those basic exercises.

I am usually not long in the gym either. On a few occasions I was there for over an hour. However, I my self have been wondering whether I should stick around longer if I want to gain some real muscle mass and/or lose weight.

How long would you reccomend working out for when only doing 2 muscle groups a night?

Sorry for thread stealing but you may also benefit from it OldSpice :)

Depends on your routine and goals. What's most important is that you're comfortable with your workout. However long it takes to complete it is how long it takes (provided you're not sitting around between sets). If you're doing cardio after lifting, it'll be longer; two body parts, it'll be shorter. I think 45-1:00 is average. Whether I'm doing a split or a FBW, I'm usually in and out in an hour, but then again I'm not a bodybuilder.

right now, I'm typically in the gym for an hour and a half, but I'm doing a circuit with cardio inbetween each circuit

i agree with def, i've heard from many sources that ur muscle workout is in a good time range of 45 to 60 minutes. especially if u r doing heavy weights. not that u cant lift ur bag later on :p

with enough intensity you can get an amazing workout done in just 30 minutes.
i do this sometimes when i'm in a bind for time. though its easy to push yourself to hard and end up puking after squats :)
