Difference between barbel and dumbell deadlifts

None at all if done right.

Can be easier to keep form with heavier weights, i did switch to dumbells but there's a greater chance of swinging the weights, greater risk of injury to back and shoulders and forearms.

Same as most things, lift right and safe and its all good.

A db deadlift is essentially the same as a DB squat. Nothing wrong with doing them but you will, or should anyway, run into weight limitations eventually.

dumbbell deadlifts require the use of steps to get the dumbbells next to the shins where they are supposed to be and not below or at the ankles. I have never done dumbbell deadlifts, but maybe I can give it a try. my gym has steps that I can set the dumbbells on for each rep to act like a conventional deadlift.

Ok I done these yesterday and my traps are absolutly killing me, I dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing. I didnt use steps though, maybe thats the reason.

A barbell is the longer, heavier bar you would typically see used for compound lifts (bench press, squat, deadlift etc.)
A dumbell is the smaller weight that can be held in one hand.
