When to Expect Results?

Long story short, I've focused on cardiovascular activities (mainly running) throughout most of my life. However, after a series of leg injuries, running long distance really doesn't make sense for me anymore.

As such, I've gravitated more towards weight lifting and away from cardio work. I know that when running, there is a rule of thumb that what you're doing now begins to pay off two weeks down the road. Is there anything like that for weight lifting? How long does it typically take to see results in terms of either mass and/or strength? 2-3 weeks? A month?

Any insight from someone more experienced would be greatly appreciated.

Jake

What up Jaker,

You are close in your guesses as it usually takes one 3 weeks to a month-and-a-half to see mass and strength results, depending on the level of fitness and body type. For mass, the body has to adapt to protein synthesis hormonally. Likewise, the body's nervous system must adjust for strength adaptions. In both cases, it takes time for the body to form these new pathways to compliment the training, provided that one is training effectively, eating right, and getting the proper rest. Also, please be advised this is a general rule for beginning weight trainers as they show the most significant increases in mass and strength from the onset of training.

Hope this helps. Later . . .

Ive heard give it 3 months and take photos every 3 months but I guess it depends how hard you work to how big the results are.

Thanks for the detailed response, I greatly appreciate it.:)

That's basically what I expected to hear. I'm about 6'1'', 185 lbs, and 21 years old so I think I have a pretty good frame/physique for putting on more muscle.

As for my nutrition, I typically eat fairly healthy foods. But I still carry the habit of eating a lot of pastas, fruits, and greens from my running days. I suppose now I would benefit from switching to a more protein heavy diet.

When you first start out or returning, your strength will increase pretty fast as you learn to syncronize and fire properly... recruitment stuff. Then it will level off. As for seeing muscle growth, if you are pretty lean, you will see results pretty fast 3 weeks roughly.

Have to agree with the PPs. Never seen any evidence that results could be visible in less than 6 weeks. I am skeptical of any program that claims otherwise.

Best wishes!

if your training, diet and recovery are spot on, you'll see results, but don't look every day.

typically the first thing you'll notice is the separation points between two muscles, like the pecs and shoulders will start to have that chiseled line that separates them.
