Crossfit?

I was thinking about trying out CrossFit 2 days a week and lifting heavy Mon, Wed, and Fri. Basically, on my heavy lifting days i'll do the good compound movement like squats, bench press, incline, pull ups, bb rows, etc. I was thinking about using crossfit instead of running/abs.

Anybody know a good crossfit routine, or is this just hype?

It all really depends on your goals.

If your goal is to be huge, crossfit is a waste. If your goals are to be fit, crossfit is great. If you want 10x things at once like many people, you need to slow your roll and focus.

I think that's legit. Crossfit as metcon is great. It is much more "fun" and rewarding than running/cardio.

Hit up the girl/hero workouts, as they are pretty good benchmarks to see if you're getting better times, and they tend to be better than the WOD's. Still, I'd stay clear of the high rep oly pulls.

Fight Gone Bad and Filthy 50 were two other benchmark workouts I liked.

I used to just check the WOD's. If for whatever reason I didn't like them, I'd make up my own circuit/metcon or do one of the hero/girl workouts.

CrossFit has really helped me cut fat, but if you are going to do CrossFit I would say go all the way and do it 5 days per week. As mentioned above, if you want to be really big, CrossFit is probably not the way to go. If you want to be strong, fast, and be able to apply what you do in the gym on a day to day basis then their is nothing better. CrossFit also gives you a mental edge that I never got by just lifting weights.

Xfit has little progression, ie, the days do not build on eachother. Xfit was created with the idea of being able to do it in accordance with your other activities. Using it as metcon every now and again is okay.

the principle of crossfit is cool, but I do have some concerns about it:
first of all, it's so random. I'm not sure how much progress you will have as the carryover from one exercise to the next isn't always that great.

second, there are often WODs with 100 dips, etc.. if one blindly follows cookie cutter workouts one will find themselves doing exercises they shouldn't do (because of imbalances, posture, etc) and when these exercises are done with 100s of reps, it can lead to injury.

I agree about the blind following, because workouts should be modified according to the person doing them. We had a WOD once where we had to do 200 dips in a day. I knocked out 110, then I needed to add a hop to finish the last 90.
