Need cardio and back strength

By cardio, I really do mean literally exercise for my heart. I know all exercise will help the heart grow stronger, but I'd like to know some tips on how to best adjust exercise to give the most benefit to your heart. Obviously I'm not talking about running 'till your chest hurts, but I think if there is anything I could do to improve my heart, it would be a good advantage to have for other exercises.

This all asside, I need some way of toning the muscles in the back, especially the lower back. I have some free-weights, but that's it. I've also got an exercise ball, and the exercises my chiropractor gave me for it feel seriously weak and ineffective to me so I hate using the thing and no longer have much room for it anywhere.

Any sort of standing exercises I could do? I know a few floor stretches, but that's about it. I'm looking more to harden the muscle rather than build it large so it will help shift my spine back into proper alignment a bit.

I should mention, I'm not in the greatest health. Physically I've been strong and flexible my entire life. My stamina could use more work though, my muscles just aren't used to being moved much, especially not repeatedly in the same motions. I can do it, but a variety of movement feels much smoother and doesn't get that same sort of stiffness. So that might be good to keep in mind at least until my muscles get more used to moving.
