pounding on abs

I'm sure most people have seen it and not really given it much thought but when working abs out, does it help when you or a training partner pound/punch them?

This will develop your abs ability to absorb energy...and if you think about it...with proper techniques this could be a very good workout.

Imagine...a very hard punch...just how hard do you think you would have to flex the abs in order to not receive any impact to the stomach? Pretty damn hard. And working a muscles is all about maximum effort...so, yes...it's fun and efficient.

Yeah...this is a great way to add a twist to your ab workout...but be careful.

:)

I had whopping cough years back, and coughed so hard i ripped muscles. I couldn't even turn over in bed for weeks. If you're looking to hurt yourself, you're onto something.

Houdini died from a ruptured appendix from letting someone punch him in the stomach.

I don't see any benefit to this and I see potential harm.

I don't see a problem mate, go for it, as long as you keep the punching very light, that's how we were training out abs at my boxing club anyway.

You sound like a teacher using STDs as a scare tactic to stop him from having sex because it's "mortally dangerous if done irresponsibly."

:p

Disclaimer:

Being like King Kong the Ape Man (instead of pounding on chest, one is pounding on abdomen), will eventually make the abs black and tan, and force one to a new battle plan

Therefore, grab a friend. The electric frying pan and bang the mental exhaust fan before you end up on a pension plan

Pounding your brain with knowledge is the better battle plan.

Just friggggggggggggggggen do what it takes, and educate yourself in what "it takes"-------------------> IS.

Alot of persons just struggle with this.

This IS:

One's personal science of applying the basic and advanced basics of diet and fitness, and learning what it takes to do both, and then learning what one's personal motivational soup IS.

Most on this forum are NOT Doctors and Scientists, but rather simple and average human beings with personal aspirations. And, "simplicity" with these aspiring people (and, there are exceptions I realize this), is the KEY FEATURE to assisting the "average" person.

Therefore apply common sense, to ones self, and when applying diet and fitness.

Rock on everyone! :)

to have somebody punch you(whats all that about) it`s rediculous(sp) anybody who tells you otherwise is a liar .You are heading for a major injury

spleen ,liver, kidney, ribs and even the heart .Not to mention any bone or muscle damage that can occur.

Dont do it .......squat man or at least punch your mate before his arm retracts and maybe you`ll live long enough to post again

bollox i cant believe u endorse this

marko, my friend - it all depends on what he wants.

Your mindset is justified but honestly there is a line to draw - light punches are fine. Full blown body punches are not.

However, I shot myself in the foot when I said the following, as it implied being forceful, which isn't what was intended - this was an example to make you understand how abs could be worked out with light punches - but I used an extreme by saying "imagine a very hard punch"

Imagine...a very hard punch...just how hard do you think you would have to flex the abs in order to not receive any impact to the stomach? Pretty damn hard. And working a muscles is all about maximum effort...so, yes...it's fun and efficient.

I have trained my knuckles this way successfully - without injury.

Don't be handing out scare tactics like teachers used to do in sex ed.

I endorse the use of logic and common sense - that's what I endorse.

Thanks.

err..... what?

I'm sure most people have seen it and not really given it much thought but when working abs out, does it help when you or a training partner pound/punch them?

This is common place in my training routine. But I'm training to be a mixed martial artist. Firstly yes, it's a punch and it can do serious harm. That's why you have to have

A. Somebody you trust training with you.

When you're at your limit, it's not funny to throw an extra punch in there just to see if it hurts...it does.

B. A way to tell them to stop, increase, or decrease the intensity. Never increase intensity without their say so and vice-versa. (it happened to me once, thankfully I didn't get hurt.)

I just use my words, but it's also understood that if you tap them on the shoulder or start moving to one side, that you've had enough.

Does it work? Yes! I can't guarentee you'll have a 6-pack but you'll get stronger for certain. There's a few tricks to it though. Before you start, remember to take a deep breath and slowly release it as you're being hit. If you don't take a breath before then you'll still do okay, but you won't last nearly as long. When you're at the end of your breath you can try taking smaller baby-breaths if you can still take more punches. And most importantly START SOFT then work your way up until you and your training buddy know about how much force you can withstand. If you keep at it, then eventually you'll be able to take some pretty heavy-duty shots. You probably won't last more than a 30 seconds to a couple of minutes at first (depending on who's hitting you and how big you are) but keep working at it and you'll get better!
