Looking for much needed advice

First, thanks for reading this. My friends decided that they wanted to gather together and make a card for an MMA event in January. Good news for me is that I'm a completely clean slate and I pick up on things fast. Bad news is that I have no previous training and am pretty much going on instincts and speed, as I'm not exactly a powerhouse. It seems that my talents involve speed and I am quite good at escaping submissions of any kind.

Right now statistically I'm 5' 8" sitting on 165 lbs. The weight set for the fight is 180. All I know of my opponent is that he has dabbled in boxing and is definitely looking for the KO, but has no ground game to speak of and does not know submissions. We're similar height and reach wise.

My question comes twofold. First, what, if any, tactics and workout routines could I use to improve my overall level of fitness and preparedness for this kind of activity? Second, is it suicide to step into the cage/ring without any style?

For comparative analysis my current routine is as follows: (its pretty light until I get better conditioning in since I don't last too long. Gotta hate childhood asthma hampering lung development.)

Sunday: Rest
Monday: Light Sparring/Cardio
Tuesday: Intense Sparring
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: Intense Sparring
Friday: Rest/Mental Preparedness
Saturday: Major Conditioning

I play cards a great deal competitively on Fridays, so I use that as an opportunity to train my mind to operate mid-fight or in intense situations and not to go into blind rages like some of the other fighters on the card are prone to do. I'm mainly looking to fill in the resting blanks with things to help my training along as well as my conditioning.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've noticed that people are looking at the post but no one really has much to say on the topic. I would really appreciate that even if someone reads my post and thinks I'm a complete moron for it, they at least let me know that they feel that way. If no one really does have anything to say then I wind up thinking that I'm actually doing it alright this way.

Its not a matter of desperation on my part, I just want some solid advice on this before I get too settled on a routine that is in fact harming me more than it would be helping.
 
IMO I would get some more training. This isn't tennis where you lose and you can play another game later. In this sport you can win and still be out of commission. I say work on conditioning and technique. Take the time to do it right. Just my opinion. I don't like to lose or win and get hurt. If it happens it happens, but it will happen when I'm at my best.
 
What's stopping you from going to a MMA school and get real training? Are you friends setting something official up or is it a tough man competition?

You say you are good from escaping submissions. However, if you win this fight, what are you goign to do when you go up against someone who has a really good ground game?

Are you not doing any weight lifting or bodyweight training at all?

You Should not just Sparring, you most also train your whole body
If you want to fight it's bettre to train your whole body
to get a KO with only one Punch you most Focus on your Forearms

Getting Strong ForeArms Will give you more Power

Speed and Power is the Best Mix

But you most also train your whole body

Always Warm Up Do some Rope Skipping and always train your stomach
by doing sit-ups, Leg lifts, Oblique Crunch (elbow to knee), Crunches, Side Bends, Side Plank and V-Ups

Monday: Squats,Deep Knee Bends,Raise on Toes and Lunges
Tuesday: Palm Up Curl, Palm Down Curl, Biceps Curl, Push Ups
Wednesday:Intense Sparring
Friday:Raise on Toes, Palm Down Curl,Palm Up Curl, Biceps Curl and Push Ups
Saturday:Rest/Mental Preparedness
SunDay:Rest

And Another tips for you to create Power is to train the Hip Flexor to by just Doing some twist

Sooooo...you have no idea what you're talking about. Please refrain from giving horrible advice.
 
someone has an obsession with forearms.. sure they help, but it's not like having strong forearms alone will help.

You lift core I can pretty much guarentee you will have a strong/powerful entire body (when it comes to physical). Heart you're born with or not, spirit you either have or work to create through heart and body, ....strong mind comes with the above, knowledge, and experience.

I agree with you, I guess when fitness forums speak of power....physical is the direction we assume the convo is headed towards. Esepecially when everyone was speakig of particular body parts on a thread. True "power" would include everything you say. Glad to have you around to set us straight.
 
I really appreciate the surge of input. I just got back from a vacation so I'm going to read over all of the posts carefully before making any comments.

My friends just kinda mangled this whole thing together. I'm more or less responsible for trying to get all the proper safety precautions in effect cause I think I'm the only one who cares whether I can walk out of this and go to my own bed rather than a hospital bed.

As for a school, believe me when I say I want to. Money's real tight around the house so getting any kind of solid school training is out of the question. As for weight training, My monetary situation again comes into play and so I'm stuck almost entirely with body weight training.

And finally, the what if scenario of coming up against someone with an actual ground game. To be really honest I'm at a stage where overall fitness and finding my style are my primary concerns. Without these things under control, I would tend to think that I'm a sitting duck whether against a good ground fighter or not.

I am a firm believer that every part of you has to be both strong and in harmony for you to perform well at anything you do. So I think we're definitely on the same page as far as that is concerned.

Also as a side note, does anyone have any method of helping to develop the others and teach everything to work together? I can train my body, and as was stated above the mind comes from knowledge and experience, but I want my heart and spirit to keep in rhythm with me as I develop everything else.
