Anything i need to know about retaining muscle?

For the next 6 months or so I'm going to focus on losing fat. Is there anything I should know about retaining at least some of my muscle?

Yes....

Your body will hesitate to shed muscle if you:

1) Only cut calories to 20% of your daily needs and not put yourself into starvation mode.

2) If you do some weight-training, your body will sense it still needs that muscle and you'll likely keep it AND stimulate your body away from starvation mode.

3) Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA's) are clinically shown to reduce catabolism....some people pop a few before & after exercise, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Just remember, it took a while for the fat to get there, it's not going to fall off over night. Eat healty, eat right and don't confuse weight with fat. You want to lose fat.

Was this a legit question are was this a set-up for another one of Mallik's spam messages?

It was a legitimate question. I have been doing weight training three times a week for about three months now. I'm only cutting calories down by about 500 a day. I'm not really into trying to lose more than a pound a week. It would be fun..but my goal is keep this weight off and if it takes me a long time to do so, then fine. But I think I need to get a little bit more serious about losing fat now and just stick to trying to maintain what I can of the muscle I have. I plan to continue the weight training 3 times a week. I just didn't know if there was more I needed to know as I'm fairly clueless.

Dena,

Sorry for questioning the legitimacy, there's been a wave of spam hitting the forum.

Sounds like you're doing things right, and kudo's to you for sticking to a 3-day workout program....very few people, let alone woman, will actually follow-through and do that sort of thing!

I myself have a regular thing where my muscle-gain offsets fat-loss...so don't be surprised if your scale isn't reading what you want it to; muscle really does weigh more then fat! Keep an eye on your body-fat%, that's really the key and if you're like me you'll watch your weight maintain while your body-fat% actually goes down!!!!

Keep up the good work! :D

I hear ya...but cardio has it's place too. It's a good idea to get the respiratory, circulatory and heart-rate up & sustained for a good period of time. The benefits of cardio are well established, but I'm starting to think & agree that it may not be the end-all of fat-loss that we're led to believe.

If you belong to a gym, you may wanna try a spin-class. When I first saw it I thought it was goofy, but if the instructor is good and you have killer-great music, it's a lotta fun!!!!!!! This one instructor is really big on music and he has some awesome mixes with techno-blends that have a strong beat. They also play with the lights and it's almost like an exercise party. Give it a shot, many find it addicting and you'll certainly come out drenched in sweat!

Just remember the 3 cornerstones of fitness:

1) Eat right
2) Eat healthy
3) Find what works for you
4) Mix it up
5) Don't wear white after labor day
