Most overrated/underrated exercises

Give me your thoughts, which exercises do you think are overrated / underrated?

Here's what I think

Underrated:
Dips (Chest Variation)
Chin ups
db bench press
close-grip bench press

Overrated:
db flies
most machine exercises

One I would add to the underrated category is pushups and one I would add to the overrated is leg extensions.

It depends who we are talking about. To people here, squats aren't underrated at all, we all know how awesome they are. But most magazines, media, and lousy trainers never have their clients squatting, so to them it is wayyy underrated. I say curls for being most overrated, and squats for most underrated regardless.

Underrated:

Military Press
Partial Deads
Sled Pulls

Overrated:

Flat BP
Squats (as opposed to deads)

under rated-

front and side planks
swimming in general
oh, and chewing food

over rated-

any exercise that i don't to regularly-- hahahaa

Underrated:

Military Press
Partial Deads
Sled Pulls

Overrated:

Flat BP
Squats (as opposed to deads)

Military Press is one of the biggest staples and compounds in my routine, my first compound in every upper body session. I love military press.

I'm basing this on what I see in the gyms or read in magazines. I'll give 5 of each

Under-
Power curls
Push press
zercher squat
bulgarian squats
rotator cuff work

Over-
Leg extensions
Upright rows
bb bench press
tricep kickbacks
db flyes

1 exercise that should go into everyones program- Caber flipping ;)

Mreik-are you actually doing Olympic lifts???

Underrated -

The Cheat Curl (I am with EVO on this one) - one of the best exercises.
ODD Object Training - overlooked in almost all training programs

Overrated -

Triceps Kickback - it seems to be the stand-by triceps exercise in the "Chrome and Fern" gyms.

machine exercises (except for seated row and lat pulldown) I think are overated and the single joint exercises. Underated I think are any exercise that is multijoint.

Overrated:

Shrugs
BB Bench Press
Bicep Curls (& all related variations)

Underrated:

Push Press
Horizontal Pull-ups
Cleans (& related variations)

Most over rated:
Bench press (Important exercise, but it is way too over-rated)

Under rated:
Vertical pressing

I also wanted to add this, they make me sick

Overrated In general (excluding this site):

Curls
Machines
Bench press

Underrated in general:

Big compound lifts...squats, DL's etc etc.
Also free weights (to the idiots in the gym.)

I say bench press is overrated because...Iv been asked so many times ''how much can you lift'' and im saying ''doing what?'' And these idiots expect you to automatically think benching! It f*cking pisses me off, its like you only go to the gym to do bench pressing or something!!

Yeah, it really annoys me how everyone asks "how much can you bench?" I automatically respond "how much can you deadlift?"
In the good old days, the question was "how much ya press?" where press meant overhead press. I must say I do think overhead press is a better way to measure strenght since lifting and stabilizing, basically just getting heavy **** over your head is a very basic natural movement. I'm not taking away anything from the bench press, it's a good exercise, but it is really just a variation of and an assistance exercise to the overhead press ;)
Put a barbell on a sunny beach on some long forgotten island where only savages live and I bet you it won't take long before they are seeing who can lift the most over their head.

So:
Underrated:
pretty much all overhead pressing (including push press, etc)

overrated:
I have no idea.. for the general population it's offcource isolation exercises, but we are not the general population, are we? :p

I quite agree karky, only reason being they probably wont have no benches :p

I bet if you came along by boat with a bench and started bench pressing with the barbell they would rip your head off and continue overhead pressing as if nothing had happened. :p
