Island Gal Makeover

I am/was the procrastinator wanting to get in shape once and for all. My goal is to be fit, strong and healthy!

I am currently 44 yrs old, 5'3'' tall, weigh 136lbs with a BMI of 24 and a sedentary lifestyle due to long hours of work and study at a desk. I therefore want to get in my requisite workouts first thing in the morning on a regular and consistant basis and maintain my weight at 125lbs and BMI at about 20. I am not overly concerned about diet as I am not a big eater, I naturally limit my fat and calarie intake and I believe in moderation (I hate to feel bloated). I am in excellent general health always having results of low to normal for cholestrol and blood pressure.

My preferred method of exercise is walking, but I wouldn't be averse to running if I think I'd get more hooked and therefore not stop at the first obstacle. My gym at home is equipped with a universal weight set that you can do most exercises on, a treadmill and a few free weights. I use the treadmill more, and mostly do upper body work on the gym set. Sometimes I exercise for a few weeks and then I don't look back in there for weeks or months. I have also done outdoor walks with friends.

The fact that I am pretty healthy and do not look overweight, makes it easy for me not to make total fitness a priority, and for others to think my seeking it is just vanity.

Any ideas how to get over this hump:confused:

If you aren't exercising, you aren't as healthy as you could be. Period. Your cardiovascular system optimally needs to be worked 3 - 4 times/ week at 70 - 85% of your maximum heart rate, which can be approximated in your case as 123 - 149.

What island do you live on?

Starting again for the umpteenth time

Of course I know that I am not as healthy as I can or should be:rolleyes: and that is why I want to make fitness a permanent feature in my life. I live on Grand Bahama in The Bahamas.:p

yes. Participate in athletic events. Marathons, triathlons, adventure races, swimming events, 5-10- 15k races, where you will have to utilize your athletic fitness. than you have a date set for perfprmance. It will vitalize and energize your fitness regimen. if you are still lookin real good skin wise you could even go into some figure competitions. in your age bracket a good 4-6 months with the right coaching can get you a trophy for the mantal.

just a few ideas for ya.

Welcome to the forum.

That's a good idea that I thought of too but dismissed because I am reluctant to commit (always too busy). I will definitely look into doing races again though since I need to change that 'too busy' thing and take care of me better. I was kinda good in local 5k walk races plenty years back.

Thanks!

Oops! Pardon my manners. Thank you guys (chillin, g8r80 & flyingfree), for taking the time to answer my posts, and others just for reading them...it is soo much appreciated!

Full length mirror! Take a good look at yourself nekked every day. You probably won't like what you see if your body fat is too high, that is you are skinny-fat...

Okay, girlfriend, here is your goal: the Conchman Triathlon (1k swim, 25k bike, 5k run), in November!

Prepare for that and you will be in the best shape of your life in no time and look marvelous!

BTW, post your pics in the Women's Health Picture Gallery.

Oh, and no "I'm too old" nonsense; I'm 48 and in the best shape of my life and am preparing for some sprint traithlons, bike racing, and an Olympic length triathlon.

Welcome to the forum. Being healthy is something we all take for granted until it's taken away, whether from age, illness or other unfortunate circumstances. You're working out now so you'll be able to enjoy a fuller and hopefully longer life. In that regard, I've found that doing strength training 3x a week and cardio 2x a week to be helpful in getting me healthier/stronger as well as dropping weight.

I visited the Bahamas once a while back - not the tourist islands but one of the quays where the people actually live. It was beautiful - and I got my first taste of fried conch (with hot sauce) - yum. :)

I'm taking the family to Paradise Island (Atlantis - where no locals live) in January. My younger son is now scuba certified so we'll do a couple of dives and then check out the new water rides at Atlantis.

Bahamas: :beerchug:

You bitch. :argue:

j/k I want to go there next year. We almost went this past June but opted for Puerto Rico instead. Much easier on the pocket book.
