How much should you been benching?

I am currently 19 years old am 5'10 and weigh 170 pounds. My question is how much SHOULD someone around my weight and height be able to bench? My max is 190, just checkin to see if my benching is below average or average. Thanks

It doesnt matter how much you are benching as long as the weight yields the right intensity.

What's "Average"?

Comparing to who? Powerlifters? Normal, everyday people? Because the majority of people in the world at your weight don't lift at all, so depending on who you want to compare yourself to, you're gonna get different answers.

I agree with NBS. It doesn't matter what other people are lifting as long as you're lifting heavy for you. THat is unless you're competing in lifting.

The "Average" as Lei said is a very vague term.

Last i heard only about one percent of the nation can bench press their own weight. Doesnt it feel good to be part of this very exclusive club?

190 sound great to me, and I believe that less than one percent can bench their own body weight. I weight in at 162 -3 right now and have set my goal to get my bench back over 200, right now it is at 185.

It sounds like he's searching for a compliment there. Anyways, the true test of strength is how much you can bench with free weights with proper form. I bench 70s 4-6 sets of 8-10 reps with the free weights; with the bar that number is raised to 200lbs for 4 sets of 8 reps. Body weight 155-156, BF% 0 upperbody, and 7% lowerbody. Currently starving yet gaining muscle mass, thank God for whey protein and cheap veggies.

Its human nature to want to compare, he can not be faulted for wanting to know. If anything it seems you are the one seeking a compliment.

7% total body fat is borderline unhealthy (6% or less is unhealthy.)
So 100% of your body's fat is in your legs basically? lol yeah right, i wont even go into how thats not entirely possible.

Congratulations silent one, you recognized the point i was illustrating but the earlier point remains vaild. Being able to tell someone you can bench high level freeweights suggests superfluous strength without disclosing one's maximum power output. I reward your cunning and fearlessness by declaring you worthy of private messaging me on any working out/social situations you may encounter.

Compared to powerlifters you'd get destroyed. Compared to people who don't lift you are amazing. Compared to lifters, I think you'd hold up quite well. I agree with Mike, when somebody can bench their BW, it's a good sign IMO.

Badmoto...you haven't gotten re-banned yet?

Thats one bad motor finger. Lol, I just had to say that. That is a tight username though...I should change mine; put some meaning into it. Its just the same as my email.

Back on topic, I think on average a person should be able to bench more then half there body weight. Benching Body Weight is good; but I read somewhere that only 2% or so people can bench there body weight. But I think for overall strength you should look at the deadlift.

edit:
There is a table here that lists your bench by poor, very poor, good and what not. I don't really like it though because it says Benching body weight is below average.

Actually i lift 30 pounds greater BENCH PRESS when lifting free weights versus the machine.

Bad, I'm curious as to why you treat Silent with such respect when everyone else noticed, and called you out on your blatantly ironic posts.

Well, this is a ONE REP Max Bench Press. If you've been working out for a little while and following all the good habits, then yes, if you could only bench your weight for one rep, it would prob not be so good. Bench pressing your weight for reps is great stuff though!

well I'm 18 and am benching 115+bar. and I don't think the bar is a lot. Yea, its low...but I am working on it. I hope to reach 130 which is my goal.

In addition to this, I got a gut and man boobs so all this benching is just increasing my strength. don't know how fat storage works, but my arms don't have a lot so I can see some definition coming. I like benching knowing that I am gaining muscle but the hard part is going to be the upcoming diet. can I hold it? will I routinely do my cardio? I never had good luck with this because I felt it was not fun. I love to eat.

Is it an Olympic bar? If so, that's another 45 pounds. If it's one of those "gray plastic weights bars" then I think that's around 11 pounds.
As far as cardio, find something you enjoy. There are lots of choices: running, walking fast, rollerblading, biking, etc.
