Just starting to work out...need suggestions

Hey all, I'm happy to find this forum since it has been a lot of help so far since I have found that what I've observed in my few sessions of working out that I've done plenty of things wrong. Anyway, with the help of this site and exrx.net, I've developed a routine. It's supposed to be from the Beginner's guide for a full-body workout on exrx's website. It's just two days, but I think I'll do this 3-4 times a week:

Routine 1:

Leg Press
Hamstring Curls
Calf Raises
Some ab exercises

Routine 2:

Bench Press
Pull Ups
Military Press
Tricep Extension
Bicep Curls

I'm 5'7, 19 years old, male, and 145-150ish pounds. I want to lose some fat and put on some muscle. I know it's a process, and I'm not expecting immediate results. I just want to ease on to the process. Any suggestions?

do you want to gain muscle or loose fat first? doing both at the same time is very hard.

You need to ditch machines. you should focus on moves like these:
Squats
Deadlifts
Bench press
Rows
Military press
Pullups/pulldowns

From my experience it has been much easier to gain muscle first then lose fat, especially if you are not very overweight (which you're stats are not).
Very true! I'm 5'8 and around 175-180 pounds, people would think I'm between average or skinny when they saw me. And it's better to work for muscle then to lose weight because YOU BURN MORE CALORIES A DAY FOR EVERY POUND OF MUSCLE YOU GET! You would achieve both goals easier if your main goal is muscle. If you do it your way your arms would probably get a little tone and size and that's about it until you gain more weight for muscle mass.

i agree, i dont think you're very fat. Its probobly just lack of muscle mass, which makes the little fat you have look bad, because there is no shape underneath it.

Thanks for the replys. I guess I will work to build muscle, then. Also, what's the difference b/t machines and freeweights for lower body exercises? My university has few free weight exercies for the lower body and they are usually taken up by the atheletes who are working out offseason or in season. I don't think there should be that great of a difference b/t machines and free weights for someone like me who is not that interested in optimal performance. Or is there actually a big difference resultswise?

Pretty big difference, depending on who you ask. I say huge difference, simply because 2 of the best lower body exercises are the squat and lunge, which you do with barbell or dumbells...
