Squats vs. Box Squat

I've been lifting for 2 years and did a squat without boxes for the first time last week. On Box Squats I usually do something like 5x5 with 265, but on Squats I did 5 x 6 @ 145. Why is thhere such a difference between them? On my box squats I go parallel and on my Squats I go parallel.

^ I honestly don't believe you. You must be doing something terribly wrong.

Because the turn is where the strain is by far the biggest and with a box you remove that critical point.
Dont see any point for you to use a box yet, you need all round strength - a box can be great when you reach a plateau but so far you should be able to get great results still with normal ones.

You removed what I would consider to be a crutch (for a beginner-intermeditate lifter). Obviously, it's going to be significantly more difficult. Less whine, more squat. ;) Watch your form, which should be a bigger factor now without the box. There are a couple good t-nation posts on proper squat form you could google for..or visit and scroll down a bit.

That's all I know to say. Git-er-dun? ^_^

Its probably mental. "oh no, the box isn't there, what if I go too low with too much weight and can't get back up!"

just keep at it, you'll probably have gains in poundage every session til you're back up to where you were.

yeah man i did ass to grass today actually and it was even harder i only did 6 sets of 4 with 135 and failed on my last rep. The other day i did box squats and did 2 of 295.

Sounds like your quads are overdeveloped in relation to your hamstringss. When you're parallel or above it's mostly quads, once you get under, it's mostly hams, as I understand it. Just keep doing full squats or any variation that works your hams and they'll catch up eventually.
