Flexibility

I found this...its the hips thats doing it

flexibility

I f you want to be flexible you will need a lot of time to get there. If you try Yoga the first thing you will have to learn is PATIENCE and Persistence. Patience is a vital part of Yoga. There are many good exercises you could perform. But it is a long term assignment. I have been practicing Yoga for years and still cannot put my feet behind my head. :D
...but this has never been my goal, either. The most important thing is: never push yourself to where it hurts. If it hurts, you already made a mistake.
(guys sometimes think ( at least this is the impression I have, looking around in the gym) that stretching as a part of getting flexible has to hurt :p , well that is bs.

How can you tell when you are doing something right? I'm taking yoga right now in my college (twice a week) and I also have the book with all the poses in there, and there is also yogajournal.com with different poses on there as well.

To get flexible, how long do I have to hold the pose at home myself? There has been no change since starting yoga. my hamstrings are still the same, and my hips.

How can you tell?

-if it hurts, it is wrong
-ask your instructor to check your poses
-check yourself in a mirror
-learn the postures THOROUGHLY before trying to hold them longer
-use your breath
-always check whether your limbs are where they belong, you can do that yourself, but getting it checked by a pro is a very good thing

in Yoga it is most important to be patient. The daily practice is the GOAL. BECOMING better on a daily basis is the goal, not to impress someone with challenging postures or to be able to do certain things in x weeks.

Have fun

Some need more time, some need less.
:D

I dont feel any hurt when I do the poses or when I stretch before/after exercising or sports. My hamstring flexibility and hip flexibility has not gotten better through yoga or stretching. nothings hurting...its just that nothings improving

I am going to pick out stretches for each part of the body (there are so many stretches out there) and you guys can see if their the best ones or not. I am not going to do any of the stretches I have been doing because no improvement.

I would say you're worse. You don't listen to anyone when they give you great advice, refuse to follow any real logic, and expect us to continue helping you.

Don't waste yourself.

You don't seem to understand that these things take TIME. Cynic called you on your quad/ham imbalance. It takes TIME to build strength in your hams, which you need anyway.

I think I am repeating myself. It takes time, patience and dedication.
To give you a rough estimation: When I started doing Yoga (I was verrrry flexible to begin with), I practiced 90 minutes per day, every day and after 6 to 8 weeks I could fold my torso on my legs, sitting flat on the ground. But everybody is different.

Be careful though, because forward-bends (like the one I described and especially those with split legs) are 'excellent' for overstretching your hamstrings.
...and that hurts.

oh. were you born flexible?

silly rabbit. :D
I have always been flexible, though I did not check my own flexibility on my birthday:D I guess, I was too busy then.
