bench press

Is there a big disadvantage to doing bench presses in a cage on a glide as opposed to doing the exercise on a regular bench? I don't have a spotter and the doing it on the glide is much more comfortable when i feel close to failure.

What you're referring to is the smith machine. While it still hits the pectoral muscles a free weight bench press is far more beneficial, as it hits all the individual stabilizing muscles.

Some people have reported shoulder problems from using a smith machine, also.

It takes time... Just curious how long have you been at it?

Start your own thread. This is unrelated to the topic. BUT...it ain't showing because you probably aren't eating right. It ain't showing because you need to be working your ENTIRE body, not just chest and biceps. It ain't showing because you may be doing the same thing too often and/or too much.

On the topic, you don't need to be going to failure, unless you are testing 1 rep maxes, which I can't see why you would be. If you are doing low reps, that's fine, but still no need to go to failure. If you are doing say 5 reps, you should still be able to get 1 or 2 after the 5, so it isn't a true 5 rep max, but only 5 reps.

I don't know your goals, but you could do higher reps anyway, NOT, on the smith machine; sets where you don't need a spotter.

I can't see why you would have a smith machine at home, so I'm assuming it's a gym in which you can ask almost anyone for a spot.
