Anyone know much about palm oil in peanut butter?

Right, so ive just found out my so called whole-nut, healthy, good fat peanut butter may not be so good for me.

It contains peanuts, palm oil and salt.

Now, is palm oil good or not? i know it is a saturated fat but i only get my fats from whatever lean meat i eat (little), nuts such as almonds and brazils (good?), skimmed milk (negligable), houmous (god bless it) or low fat coleslaw (some low fat mayo and ff yoghurt)

I found this

but its all still clear as mud to me.

So, should i drop the peanut butter or keep i?

Also, in the UK peanut butter is mostly the processed, tastless pap such as 'Sun-Pat'. The one i found is the best i could get.

All help is appreciated!

Thanks
Ben

Here is an article that should help you understand it better.

If not having the peanut butter is going to cause you to binge or otherwise make you feel deprived and you are only having it in small amounts then really i don't think you should beat yourself up so much about it. But if the time comes where you are trying to bust through a plateau, and aren't making much progression, then it should probably take a back seat in your diet for a lil.

Palm oil is the second most saturated oil, just under coconut oil. Both seen to add to heart disease risk and elevate blood cholesterol.

It's hard for me to give you advice because I'm not sure about the food options in the UK, I know in the states you can get organic peanut butter containing only peanuts and salt. Hopefully, you can find something like that.

To agree with the previous post, don't beat yourself up over it. It sounds like you're getting an extremely low amount of saturated fat in your diet, so a little should be okay. ADA recommends under 10 grams, so it looks like you're well below that.

Keep it up with the nuts, and maybe try adding in some salmon or milled flaxseed? You need some fat in your diet, especially for vitamin absorption.

Good luck with your peanut butter search ;)

Also to make your own peanut butter it is quite easy. Also the more fresh it is the better. So maybe give this a shot...

1 to 1 1/2 cup unsalted, shelled peanuts (also you can mix it up and throw a lil almond in there)
1-1/2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
(optional for sweeting add 2 tbsp of honey or some splenda)

Just grind and blend till its the way you want it. Now you have to store it in the fridge or else it will go bad in a few days. Homemade lasts about 2 week in the refridgerator. so if you can't find good peanut butter, just make your own. It's easier with a food processor but i have done it with a regular blender.

i love skippys creamy reduced fat peanut butter. is that bad for you??
